Working On a Finish

Hi,

I have been playing again, this is a solid end Baron made with curly koa.

I have been trying to get my lacquer process down, so this is one that looks like I might be on the right track.

This pen has 6 coats of spray lacquer, rubbed out with 8000-12,000 MM wet then plastic polished.

It's an even finish that fills the wood grain, I think I like this finish, it took three days waiting for the lacquer to cure.

One note, becareful of the edges, they sand through even with MM easily.

Where did you get the hardware for that pen. That is exactly the look that I have been searching for to give to my father. I am waiting for some macassar ebony blanks in the mail and I think that it would really be set off by the hardware shown above. I will post pictures when I get the turning done.

Jim, I really like the finish have enjoyed all the solid end pens you have been posting of late. Might need to experiment with that idea.

The pen kit is called Baron, this is a sterling plate finish. I buy mine from a Canadian supplier(William WoodWrite), but you can get them in the USA from Arizona Silhouette. Hope that helps..;)

I've been experimenting with a water-based lacquer that Target coatings makes. I like the idea of water-based, since I work in my basement. Each coat dries in about 30 minutes. So far, so good.

No, we don't have a Target dealer in Ottawa. I order from Saskatoon, of all places.
This is not the "Target" stores in the US, that uses the red target as a logo. This is target coatings.
I started using their products on the bedroom furniture that I made for my house, and I'm just now starting to play with it on pens. The beauty of it is that it is the first water-based lacquer that you don't need to sand between coats to get burn in.
