I will let you decide if this is a shalow bowl or a dish. My wife calls it an ash tray.
The wood is Africa Sumac it is 9.5x 1.5 and it was finished with Watco Danish oil and buffed. It is a core from a bigger bowl. The wood had some light curl in it but not much of it is in this piece.

Very nice! I love the rim, and the scored lines are a great touch. What a great color too. It's a very similar shape and size to a black cherry piece that I was just turning tonight. Nice coincidence! Keep up the great work.

Very nice form and finish. And I'd call it a shallow bowl...

Mike, the form and finish suit this well, I too end up with a lot of this sized blank from cores. I like the detail under the rim. My only concern would be damage to the sharp rim if this is to be used rather than displayed.

Thanks everyone I really appreciate it.

For those of you not familiar with African sumac it starts out as a very uninteresting pink color but gets red when left in sunlight. This is my first finished piece useing it and it tanned by the pool for 2 days to get the dark red color. It probably would have gotten darker it left out longer but the color was about where I wanted it. It is a very nice wood to work with and shines up really well.
Very strange wood though because the sealed log sections in my garage started cracking from the bark in, so a lot of the pieces I got out of this haul are shallower then I would normally like. Expect to see a lot more of this from me in the next year. I DNA dried this one but most of them are air drying.
