I don’t know if this has been discussed, and I hate to bring up controversy, but, I often log-on to the Creek using my work internet access. All picture hosting sites are blocked by my employer, so I don’t see many of the pictures which people post. That is a small problem and if there’s something I really want to see, I’ll log on differently.

The bigger problem is that sometimes very useful information disappears from our community because the original links don’t work anymore. I can imagine reasons why people like to keep control over the images, but I’m not sure if the potential loss to the Creek is worth that.

I'm wondering what others think.

The administrators of SMC have always recommended that images for inclusion in threads be uploaded to the SMC server, rather than linked to. This insures that the material stays with the threads/posts into the future...remote sites do disappear or become inaccessible. And yes, some firewall/proxy setups do disallow display of remotely hosted images.

I have a file on my computer full of pictures. I open a picture, hit copy, but I cant paste it into this thread. I can copy a picture from the web and paste it into this thread. When I try "insert image" it asks for an html address. What do I have to do to paste a picture out of a file? (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/member.php?u=869)

Scott there is a tutorial over on the support forum. (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/forumdisplay.php?f=7)

But the short answer is that when you are posting, just scroll down and use the "Attach files" section for uploading images

Scott, at the bottom of the "reply" box (if you're quoting or do "go advanced", there is an options box that says "Manage Attachments." Go to that box, upload your pictures onto the Creek, then insert them into your post using the paperclip at the top of that box. You can't add pictures to a post unless you "go advanced" or you've used the quote feature. Pics have to be sized--usually to 480x600 pixels. If you need to resize, you can download PIXresizer as a free download from the web - just google "PIXresizer" - I don't have the url here at work, but it's available through Google.

This way, the pictures stay on our server rather than disappearing into la-la land if an offsite link goes belly-up.

Firefox has an option that WILL BLOCK images hosted outside of the linked URL. Tools/Options/Content and there is a check box for Load Images and another From original website only.

This needed to be unchecked to get embeeded imaged linked in financial websites.

I'm guessing that IE might have a similar option.

Hope this helps.

Cheers
