Just a thought, are you hammering in the center before mounting it?

I turn some of these, and for almost all spindles, I will turn a tenon on one end, and mount it in a chuck. Much better holding power, especially when you part off the tailstock end of the pin (turn the speed down). I have the steb centers also, and to me, the 4 blade center works better. I have had the same problem with the steb centers tearing out, no matter how I pound them in, or how much pressure I put on the tailstock.

Could the tailstock be slipping as you tighten it up? I had problems with my Jet mini tailstock slipping until I replaced the round clamp block with a square one.

I have just turned a dozen of these. I just used a spur drive and turned between centers. Worked fine. I have some glue ups on the bench now but I am tired of turning rollling pins.
