I want to thank everyone for their help in how to make the coasters. I used canarywood. They are about 4" diameter. It was my first attempt at 'matching' items :o So, of course, the ONE that I measured ended up to small. After I started just eye-balling them I got 5 close enough. Now I've a sixth to get done and get the finish on them.... Then comes the holder

Nice job, Bonnie. My wife has been asking me for some. I'll show her this to give her an idea of what she could get.

Nice work, Bonnie....

How'd you mount them to the lathe? I've done a few with double stick tape, which seems to work OK, but I'm always afraid of creating a "flying saucer!"

BTW...I've made a few items that are much deeper than coasters. I give 'em away as wine bottle coasters, but quite a few folks have used them to hold pocket change, keys, etc.

I mounted mine with a glued on tenon to turn round and do the top, using the tail stock for support. Then I mounted it in a big flat chuck to take off the tenon and shape up the bottom some. I had worried about mine turning flying saucer, but (knock on wood) hasn't happened.

Bonnie, if you are making several items of a given size you might find it helpfull to make yourself a simple card template:

http://quest42.co.uk/woodwork/bin/template.jpg

On the lathe, after you have trued up the face of your blank, with the lathe running mark the centre with a pencil.
Then with lathe still running, using the card template mark the blank with the inner and outer diameters.
You can do the same with the perifery to mark the edge thickness or position of any decoration after it is trued up.

Saves trying to read a rule or calipers and is accurate enough for this sort of task.

In use similar to this:

Which comes from a chuck tennon and socket gage article:

Bonnie that is a great looking set. The LOML thinks those would be a good idea so she thinks I should make a half dozen for the house.

Very nice Bonnie, just one more to go.

Thanks :) I really think a set of 4 coasters is enough. With 5 turning out, the fifth could be a spare. My sister didn't care for that idea for some reason lol

Very nice Bonnie, I've been wanting to try this for some time. Maybe this post will motivate me. I really like canary wood too. Hope your sister likes them as much as we do.

Most excellent Bonnie. :D

I think you did really good on these. I guess I'll add this to the list of things to make for this coming Christmas. ;)

Thank you all for your kind comments. I JUST got the 6th one turned. Now I'll start coating them with spar and get the candy dish turned between the coaster coatings.

Any suggestions on the best way to coat the bowl? I bought some salad bowl finish. I don't have a buffer to use, so am hoping I can buff it on the lathe?

Figured I would add a picture of them after the first finish coating before I forget. (Excuse the picture, I'm not much of a photographer )

Very nice set of matched coasters. At least in the picture, they look identical. Probably only you will ever see any differences since we tend to be overly critical of our own work. And always remember, they are hand made thus allowing minor differences.
I'll be anxious to see the holder and candy dish you mention.
