A friend of mine just got a free Powermatic Model 71 12" table saw. It is now in my shop getting some general fix-up and rust removal.

According to the OWWM listings, this saw was most likely made around 1960-61. It has a normal table size like the PM 66 but it has a 1" arbor like the PM 72 and 74.

OK you old dudes;)....... anybody remember the PM 71?
(I was wearing diapers about then:o)

From looking at the internal workings, this saw is not built nearly as well as the better known PM saws. One item in particular that stands out is the u-joint driven threaded rod for the saw's lift adjustment (see photo).

Also it appears that the trunion is hanging from the table top like a contractor saw rather than being mounted in the cabinet.

Did they market the 71 as a "cheaper" saw or was this the way all PM saws were done back then?

Was this saw just a short run model prior to PM coming out with the much heavier 72?
