Hello,

I have a 1 X 8 treaded headstock on my Palmgren lathe. Last night when I tried to put my chuck on, it would not screw all the way on, neither will my bottle stopper mandrel. Somehow, I think the threads may have been damaged. I need some advice on how to inexpensively correct this. I'm trying to get this bowl done for fathers day - nothing like waiting until the last minute, right!!

As always, thank you all for your generous help and suggestions.

Happy Turning,
Daniel Heine

An 8 pitch thread is tough to mess up. I assume that you ensured that there is no foreign junk on the threads. Since you are having trouble with both a chuck and an arbor, it would seem to be the head stock that is causing the problem. You should be able to see any burs or rough spots on the thread is they are there. You can either use a small triangular file to clean up the threads or you could always buy or rent a die for an 8 pitch, 1" diameter thread and simply chase the threads with it.
