View Full Version : Traditional Shaker Work Bench Plan

Hello All
I don't normally use plans but I am thinking of upgrading to a much nicer work bench. Does anyone know of a place where I can get plans for a traditional Shaker work bench? I am talking a true monster!!

It's been a while since I looked, but I think Landis' The Workbench Book has plans for a Shaker bench. As I recall, they are not detailed shop drawings, but are detailed enough to use a point of departure to design your own version.

As I recall, Lon Schleining has a book The Workbench: A Complete Guide to Creating Your Perfect Bench which has a rather detailed plan for a Shaker bench. Pat

I would definitely consider this in the mammoth class :D, Shaker workbench measures 37-1/2 in. deep by 148 in. wide by 34-1/2 in. tall. Not sure abut plans but contact Mr. Stair, Wilmington, NC.

Earlier, I suggested you visit Lon Schleining's book. While it is a great book and I read it often, the example I was thinking about was in the Scott Landis book called "The Workbench Book" as someone else pointed out earlier.

Thanks for all the feedback, I have looked through both of those books...and they definately have some pics but not a very good set of plans..I think I am going to build a variation on this plan..

I've been doodling a Shakeresque styled bench based in part on the picture of the FWW bench above. This is what I've got right now.

It's 84" long x 30" wide x 36" tall. Construction would be plywood for the case and multiple layers of 1 1/8" beech counter-top for the top. The model is full of ideas that I'm not sure I would actually act on, but which are interesting to consider.
