Hi,

I am new to SMC. Mark Singer of Laguna Beach turned me on to this web page. I have been woodworking for approximately 4 years and have spent most of my time learning different joinery techniques on shop cabinets and furniture for my home. My shop is nearly complete and is much more functional today than it was a month ago.

I met Mark a couple of months backand have enjoyed our conversations and time spent in his shop. Mark is one of the most accomplished and knowledgeable woodworkers I know and is very gracious in sharing his knowledge and time. He was kind enough to provide me with a CAD drawing of my shop with his recommendations on where each piece of equipment should be placed for optimum functionality. The new layout is great!

Thanks Mark!

I also recently received an Onieda-Air 2hp dust collector and I am looking forward to connecting the duct work soon! Any recommendations on installation would be most welcomed.

I'll post some photos soon.

Hi Adan,

Welcome to SMC! Your shop layout looks nice but I have one burning question:

Where do you put the car??? :p

At my house, I have only one direction to "grow" a dedicated shop and that is down. Living in CA, you probably don't have a basement. God how I would love one...I grew up in CO and thought all houses had basements...you know, just like all houses have a kitchen, right?

Again, welcome...Mark creates some wonderful wood....

Chris,

Thanks for the welcome reply. The bench can be moved to the right, which opens up the left parking bay. It's a three (3) car garage with a single car garage next door to the left. I can park one car in each.

I hear you. . . it would be nice to have a basement!

Welcome to the Creek. I hope you enjoy your time here. Won't be any time before you take over the other bays of that garage. Enjoy!

Welcome aboard. Looks like that's going to be a very functional shop with plenty of flexible space when you need it. Besides, it's un-realisting to park cars in a shop... :D

As to your duct work, I suggest you avail yourself of Oneida's free service (since you bought the cyclone) to help plan that out for the most efficient design. They are super to work with.

Hi Mark,

The new bandsaw is great! I can't believe I waited this long to buy one. It is currently running on 115V, however, I plan on re-wiring the motor this weekend and adding the necessary receptical to run it on 230V as you suggested. Thank you for showing me how to use a bandsaw and in so doing instilling in me an appreciation for the machine.

I recieved a .PDF of the duct work layout and materials list from Onieda this afternoon. The cost to lay the pipe how they have it is approximately $1,200! I contacted a few friends of mine and was able to find two buddies who work for companies that produce commercial dust collection pipe and fittings and I'm told they can hook me up for 1/2 the costs! I'll wait and see.

Do you have any projects on the horizon?

Adan,
I have to finish the doors for my daughter Jessica's closet. I also want to design and build the workstations for my studio. I have a table I made for my mother that I got back when she died...a year ago. I want to redesign the legs. I would like to mahe a couple of nice lounge chairs. I have admired the work of Hans Wegner for years and I am studying his great designs in depth. I will work the design out carefully before I begin.Probably make a quick prototype I want to do something fresh. If its not comfortable its not really a chair... Its hard all the great ones have been done...and yet I think there is room for at least one more! Of course that will give me a chance to use my new Lee Valley shaves.
I want to make another cofee table...I am trying to buy a thick slab of teak from my source in Bali. I have a shipment coming soon one piece is a 13ft long table Ryan bought. Their teak is amazing!
let me know if you have any bandsaw delemas...it sounds great so far.
