This past weekend, I received an old wooden body hand plane from my step-father. It appears to be a jointer, as it is about 20" long, and has "New York Tool Co." stamped on the front of the toe. He said it belonged to his grandfather who passed away in the late 1800's. Does anyone know any history about this company? I can't seem to find any information on the internet, and nothing at the library yet. I thought it would be nice to find out a little history and possible age of this plane.

It seems to be in decent shape, but the wedge is slightly damaged on one of the lower corners and the iron has been beat with a hammer at some point. It looks like the mushroomed head of a metal chisel after years of abuse. I'm not sure what work will be involved in repairing this to usuable condition.

Any information is appreciated.

New York Tool Company is a maker's mark used by Auburn Tool Company from 1864 to 1893 according to A Guide to the Makers of American Wooden Planes, 4th ed.
