What I usually call my lathe is not printable for a public format. For that matter...it's a name I use with many of my other tools.

And....remarkably the same name I used for both of my son's until they were grown-up and got some brains!

I think my names for the tools has something to do with my skills...or lack thereof. But...I'm still not willing to back down on the kids' names.

Joe 'Jet' - I bought my 1642 at a trade show (IWF), the floor demo model, all week Joe Getty from Georgia was demo-ing on. He is a machinery dealer/rep that is a semi-pro turner and quite a character. My work creates an opportunity to run into him about once a year.

Seeing that it's a General, it's........well can't decide between General Sherman or Custer!!! I guess I'll have to play a little more with it to decide.

All my tools have the same first name, Al.
But for short, is just use the initial, A.

Hence,
A table saw
A jointer
A band saw

The list goes on and on.

So Bob the New Testament Era started a little over 2000 ago & Methuselah is mentioned with in the first 3 books of the old Testament so make that ++++++++++++++ a few years.

Some of your names are very entertaining! Mine aren't near as interesting. The bench lathe is always just referred to as "Dad's Little Lathe." (belonged to my Dad and I ended up with it after a brother had it for years and gave it to me). The other lathe a good friend in Vermont named it - he called it the BGM. Big Green Machine. Pretty apt, I'd say! Jude

In my entire life I've only given a name to one inanimate object.
My pickup truck is ALWAYS refered to as The Burgundy Lemon.
That is not to say that I don't call various tools names from time to time.

You got your genus and species....lathicus mustardius, lathicus onewayandonlyonewayius, my personal favorite, lathicus oliversupremius. But when you start blessing your spinner with a name, talking to a hunk of iron like it's your sweetie or an old drinking buddy, it might be time to check the ventilation in the shop.

Mine, Ollie of course.
