Finished this up recently from the middle of a big crotch piece. 6 1/2" diameter by 6" tall w/ Ebony collar, buffed Antique oil finish.

Just plain awesome work. The simplicity of the form perfectly contrasts the wild figure.

Very nice. I need a lot more practice on plain bowls but I'm itchin to try a HF. Beautiful work.

Travis, I love that form. As usual, you have created another piece that makes we say "wow, I wish I could do that!". Thanks for the on-going inspiration.

Travis

There's a new favorite piece I've seen here.

You seem to get good 'fill in' of the porosity of walnut with Antique Oil. How many coats are you putting on? Sanding Sealer?

Beautiful hollowform, Travis. Ditto my comments about black walnut in Mark's thread...wonderful stuff...and you did it proud on this piece!

With that finish, the grain pattern looks like it's about an inch below the surface of the finish! It's beautiful. Like Jeff said, another piece that makes me say "wow, I wish I could do that!".

blah blah blah another perfect, beautiful, well balanced, finished, perfect form, hf from Stinson......Man I'm really starting to get jealous.:D

Hey Travis do you still blow things up on the lathe? I'm hoping when I start diong work as fine as yours, I'll be able to quit worrying about blowing the piece up.

All said and done a great piece. I love the grain in the walnut. SPLENDID!!

Great job, love the form and finish. I haven't tried the antique oil finish yet, looks like it buffs out great. What brand do ya recommend?

Happy Turning,

Thanks everyone. Frank/Shane, I think the key to getting a good finish is surface prep. I powersand to 800 grit, blowing the piece off with compressed air between grits. Then I wipe it down good with mineral spirits. After that flashes off, I apply a heavy coat of Minwax Antique oil with a piece of old t-shirt. Let it sit for a few minutes until it starts to get tacky, then wipe it down good with clean paper towel. Repeat the next day. After the 2nd coat has cured overnight, I then buff with ALL 3 compounds of the Beall system. Yes, I use the white diamond on everything, even Walnut. Just load the wheel lightly. Easy and foolproof, I like that. ;)

Travis,
Thanks for providing your finishing steps. I have one follow-up question: Do you knock down the bumps with anything after each coat of antique oil dries, or does the paper towel and buffing take care of any uneven surfaces?

That's really nice Travis! Just curious, did you get it that round in one turning or did you turn it sideways? It looks perfectly round in the photo.
