Cracking question

I got some ash and russian olive wood when the city cut them down on a golf course. I cut the log in 3-4 foot sections, and anchor sealed the ends. I have cut and turned a few pieces from them, and put the rest in a storage unit. Last week I went to get a piece at the storage unit, and the ends of the ash were severly cracked. What went wrong??? The logs might have been frozen when I sealed the ends, but the anchor seal cured just fine. The storage shed couldn't have gotten above 85 Degrees by that time of year. The rusian olive is just fine, and some poplar that I sealed about 5 weeks ago and stored in the same shed is starting to crack. What am I doing wrong?
