What are the dimensions of the rail and stile or post and beam stock?

Generally, a double tenon would be used...but depends a lot on what it is you're making.

Maybe even a triple tenon would be called for, depends on the wood used and how the wood was milled (quartersawn, flat sawn, etc.).

A coffee table 2 inch square legs 5X3/4 hard maple flat sawn rail. Halsey

A full height tenon haunched 1 1/2'' @ top should work well. The tensile stress is at the botom of the stretcher. A double 1 1/2" would work also.
