I am new to turning, and all I have is an el cheapo set of "carving chisels". To be fair, I was able to make a perfectly usable handle for an old chisel as my first project, but I suspect set of chisels actually aimed at turning would make my life simpler.

What are your recommendations?

Michael - a great starter set is the HSS 8 piece set from Harbor Freight. Costs somewhere around $35-$40. The set is for spindle work and allows you to learn how to sharpen before getting the 'better' tools.

I'll second that. The Harbor freight set also allows you to experiment and decide what you like.

The other thing I highly recommend is the Wolverine jig or if you have more time than $$$ making a simular set up from plans available online.

The other thing is it is hard to beat is instruction from another turner to get started.

Have fun
