Can some one tell me what the differance is between a mini and a midi lathe. I am very new to turning and will be turning pens. I have also heard that a vs jet lathe would be a good lathe for this.

PS hello everyone

Pretty much the name...marketing and all that... These terms generally refer to the same class of machine.

I agree that the Jet VS is a good machine to look at, either the 10" swing version that's been around for some time or the new 12" swing machine recently introduced.

Thank you Jim as I said I am very new to turning. The last time I turned anything was in shop class in 1974 or 75 and will be attending a class or 2 before I buy my lathe. Thanks again.

Sam, take a look at the WoodTek midi before you buy - 6 speeds, 10" swing, 15" centers. It's my go-to lathe right now, and enough to enable me to start turning small bowls and stuff. Price is right, too.

Bernie. As I said on that "other place", I'm setting a goal of the end of JUNE to get a bowl done. If I make it, you'll see it. I'm going to have to go back and ask Andy to add your name to those who are "gently" prodding me to get to bowls!!!
