View Full Version : Oil stain as toner?

I hate to admit that I stained a maple (wood and plywood) cabinet with Minwax stain, but after about 15 tries with different finishes the customer finally liked the color.

After the stain dried, I started my usual Target USL routine, but I am not satisfied with the evenness of the color... I would like to spray some toner on the lighter areas. The "proper" technique is probably to tint the USL with matching Transtint or similar dyes, but I am concerned about getting a good match for basically "touchup" work.

Can I sand/scratch the USL surface and spray a thin film of the Minwax stain as a toner? Or is there some other ritual that I can follow to use the original stain (for color match) as a toner?
