Shallow bowl, height is a little over 1-1/4", Bowl Diameter is about 4-1/2"
I cut the flat spot around the hole with a slight taper towards the hole & the finger with a slight taper towards the tenon. The tenon is shorter then the hole to make sure it would bottom out on the bowl. After gluing it in there is a slight gap between the finger & the bowl.

What did I do wronghttp://www.turnwood.net/YaBBImages/huh.gif

I don't like the look of the bottom it looks "DUMPY" should I have made a foot? if so near the rim or closer to the center?

Thanks for the help.

Just guessing, but when you glued the tenon in the socket, the entrapped air below the tenon might have been compressed enough to push the tenon back up. A tiny pressure-relief hole to the bottom of the bowl would correct such a problem. Could also increase the size (depth) of the socket and clamp the tenon vertically so that the air isn't compressed as much.

Except in fully-seasoned wood, a flat bottom may develop a wobble due to continued warping. Better to provide a support ring with the inner portion of the bottom dished. I like to provide a very small step outboard of the ring - makes the bowl appear to float in air.

I agree with Joe a flat bottom will only bring disapponitment I usually go for a recess with a little rim so if the bottom expands the recess takes up the slack and the bowl sits flat.Nice work anyway just my 2 cents worth.

Chuck,
I like your overall concept. While you seemed to be questioning your design you appear to have executed your design very well other then the fit issue you point out.

If you were to make another try shrinking the whole thing 40 to 50%. The user will want to display thier jewelery on this piece. It's so big I think the jewelery will get lost by virtue of scale. Look at some of the finials on some of the pieces here on the Creek for ideas to spice up the finger of your design.

I remember an article in Woodturning Design magazine in late 2005 that was just the ring holder without the bowl. Your idea is better. Add a few details and you'll be in the magazine.
