 I have an older Emerson made Craftsman Model 113.232240 6" jointer with spring loaded blades rather than jackscrews. Are the magnets in the Jointer Pal strong enough to hold down against the springs while tightening???????

Take the springs out is the way to go if you choose to use that gauge. Personally I always set knives from higher up to level with the outfeed table. I don't find those jigs to be very accurate but they will get you within the ballpark. I never use the jacksrews either. Most of the jointers I work on don't have anything so my top down method works on all jointers. I find a $12 dial indicator and 1/2" button tip with a simple block of wood for the base is the superior method to set knives. I can do a 4 knife head in a leisurely 20 minutes and have it within .0005".

I tried the Jointer Pal jig and returned it because a simple straightedge was more precise. I verified this with a dial indicator.
