I am interested in learning how to sharpen and set a hand saw. I tried doing a search and got a lot of info but not on what I was looking for. Im sure it is there cause I know you guys have discussed this at some point. I have a friend in Big Fork, MT. that im sending one of my saw sets and I wanted to send him some printed info if it was available to help him with setting his saw. It is a big bow saw for cutting fire wood blocks and then I suppose any other saw he may have. Thanks for any help you may be able to provide me. Actually this is for me too cause I have the tools, sets and a vice but have never done it.

For whatever reason, the dept. of Agriculture's web site cannot get accessed this evening, but the document for larger cross cut saw filing is accessable as a PDF:

http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/download/hep/fspubs/pdf77712508lo.pdf

You can right-click on the above link and choose to save it to your computer or open/save it in your browser as long as you have Adobe Acrobat.

The principles for sharpening bow saws designed for firewood are very similar to sharpening/setting larger one and two man cross cut saws. I suspect it will be easy to make the leap between the above instructions and the saw you have.

Doing handsaws is different enough that if you need those instructions, you can get them from the Vintage Saw web site:

Take care, Mike

Mike, absolutely perfect. I printed a copy of the setting info and will mail it to my friend tomarrow. The sharpening info was just right too. I will give it a shot at sharpening and setting a few of my users. I have a back saw that really needs it bad, very small teeth and it sticks. From the information on setting it really needs more set as well as sharpening. Thanks again.
