This is a piece of what I believe to be sugar maple, I cut a couple weeks ago. Hollowing this long of a peice was a new experience for me. I wasn't sure on how to sand the inside as I didn't want to stick my hand in there with the natural edge. My wife came up with the idea to put a sanding disc holder in my Monster and sand with that and it worked well.

the vase is 11" by 5 1/2" finished with antique oil and beall buffed. As awlays critques are welcomed. I should also add that the finish is much Glossier in person than the pictures show.

Very nice vase Bob! Really like the grain patterns and the contrast between heartwood/sapwood. Looks like your wife came up with a great idea of how to sand! Nice work!

Also noticed you have a steady rest. Am in the process of figuring out how to make my own and if you have the time I would appreciate a photo or 2 showing the rest. Thanks.

Nice vase Bob must have been a real challenge to work on something that deep.

Oh yeah! I like that Bob! Love the coloring, reminds me of a nice big fudge-topped ice cream cone. :D

Bob, when I opened your post all I could see was the top edge. Then I scrooled down and was pleasantly suprised. A difficult form and you did a great job with it !!!

Nice work.. I really like the contrasting colors and the NE provides great definition to the rim. :)

Bob Thats one heck of a nice job. I really like the way you created your sanding apparatus. I may have to steal that idea. And your steady is a great idea too. Great ideas all the way around.

Thanks for all the kind words guys, This is one of the peices I am most proud of. Up until now I have tried to emulate others forms (which I will still do as I like those forms) But I had this form in my head and went through my stash and found the right peice for it and it came out just as it was in my head.
