I finally shot some photos of our new Skyscraper Lamp. It was made from poplar with a faux marble finish (to match other marble in my living room) and gold leaf fluting. The finihsing part took longer than the woodworking.

Here's some photos...

Wow! Jeff, that is just stunning. Where did you find that shade? Everywhere I look, all they have is those "Chinese hat" types? How tall is that lamp? I really like it.

Hi Nancy,
Thanks for the complimento! The shade is from Target, believe it or not. It was difficult to find this size and shape. The lamp is 32" high (base to top of shade)

Awesome Jeff, I love it!...very Art Deco.

What is the faux marble made from? Is it a laminate or something solid like corian?

It's really nice to see that project in the end after you shared the rendering early on. Nice work!

Thanks for the kind comments.

Tim...the faux marble finish was made using acrylic paints. My brother did the finishing. He used a real marble base from my coffee table and matched the colors and grain of the marble. It took him a long time but he match it perfectly. His education in commercial and fine art certainly helped too! :)

I have to apply some gold leaf to some akward table legs for a customer. I have never used gold leaf and am wonderning how steep the learning curve is.

That's a real nice lamp, I must say. Nice patio deck too.:)

Very nice Art Deco piece! This is an excellent example of a period that is largely under represented in modern woodworking.

That's really cool. I especially like the dramatic shot from the base.

Extra fine work, Jeff. Until now, I'd taken a dim view of faux finishes, but this is superb.

Couple tiny questions:

The picture with the lamp on the (carpet?) shows the lamp unplugged, but there are two or two and a half images/reflections of a lit bulb; how? what? huh?

Any particular reason for double switches? One on the socket, and another in-line.

Splendid design and execution.

Beautiful lamp. Unusual but interesting design.

Thanks all for the kind replies.

Joe...the picture of the lamp on the carpet was computer generated. The double bulb effect was caused by the light bulb's rays hitting the interior of the shade which was improperly assigned a glossy finish as well as a semi-transparent texture. The result was an improper reflection. You are very observant regarding the cord too. I re-used this cord model from another CAD drawing for a lamp project that actually uses the switch on the cord. I was just being lazy. :)

Russell...the gold leaf was kind of awkward to use. The lamp's gold finish had a crackled look which we liked, but it was not what we where aiming for. I strongly suggest fooling around with it first. The imitation stuff is much cheaper to practice. Perhaps folks in the finishing forum can give you better info on it. Mine was a happy mistake.

I can see that grabbing a persons attention when they walk into the room. The marble look is great and I can sure see how taking that much care would burn up more time than the substrate. Very well done.

Well, now, that by itself is pretty cool. I guess the isometric cartoon should have been the hint, but I didn't pick it up. Neato.
