I got this blank from a member of my turning club. He must've had it for quite some time, as it was bone dry and had some cracks in a couple of the piths. I rough turned it and filled the cracks with epoxy and charcoal dust, then finished turning. 7 1/2" diameter by 5 1/2" tall, buffed Antique oil finish.

Travis,

Every time I think I am making some progress and starting to get a handle on this turning thing, you post a picture of another gorgeous piece. You are really starting to get on my nerves.:)

That is a great looking piece, Travis! I'm (hopefully) on the verge of getting my old Oliver up and running and work like this certainly inspires me! Thanks for sharing.

Sure is some good looking wood. I've got five or six 6",8" to 10" dia limbs and one a bit larger with a 3 or 4 way crotch in it if anyone wants it. Doesn't look like I will ever get anything done with them. Some may be spalted by now. Tree was felled 18-20 months ago. But I did get some 250 bd ft of flatwork lumber from that tree. And one 7/4 slab that I'm thinking I might try a router turned platter out of. But without a lathe set up I don't think I will be doing anything like this...Not that I could, that one is great looking.

Nice job, Travis. That Antique Oil sure buffs out nicely. I like the finish on this one a lot.

Thanks for posting. I was wondering what bradford pear looked like turned. I have several pieces of it as a result of the 80+ mph winds that blasted through Dallas a few weeks ago. I opted for 2 short logs of it. It should yield 4 pieces or so.

Travis Beautiful as always, How long do you wait to buff the antique oil? I normaly only wait a day or 2 but it doesn't look as nice as yours.

How long do you wait to buff the antique oil?
Bob

Bob, I've found from my experience with the Minwax brand, that I can buff the next day without any problems.

I have a lot of Bradford Pear from the storms around here a year ago. It is a dream to turn, but just as I was starting to think it was kind of a ho-hum looking wood, you show up with your gorgeous HF. Thanks for the inspiration.

I turned a HF from Bradford pear a couple years ago and I can report that it turns very nicely. I finished it with CA, figuring that if it looks good on a pen then it ought to look great on a HF. The good news: the CA finish looks great. The bad news: the fumes nearly did me in. If you decide to do this then do it outdoors on a windy day.
