I'm leaning towards a 12" jointer instead of an 8". I noticed grizzly has two 12" models. The G0609 is the lower priced unit but seems to have good specs. I was thinking of getting it with the Shelix cutterhead. I live in SoCal so Wilke jointers are out due to shipping cost. Has anyone seen or used this machine or have any opinion about it? Am I crazy to spend 2 to 3Xs the money for a 12" over an 8"? Thanks for all advice/ input.

crazy?? sure, but why not.
I had a 4", then a 6" then i decided I wanted a large one and get it over with.
the cheapest 12" grizzly was also on my list, but in the end i decided to go with the 10" Oliver, great bang for the buck and an amazing machine.
If i were to ever outgrow that one, I would get a 20", nothing less:D

i have read posts that say the griz 0609 for $1595.00
is the same machine as the shop fox 1744 12 inch for $2195.00 just green in color.
the 3 or 4 posters all liked it and were very happy with their purchase. do a search some of the posts are on this forum.

You are not crazy...there is so much more you can do with the wider jointer, including working with odd-shaped constructions (such as laminations) as well as surfacing wide planks or gnarly stock at an angle to the cutter head. Don't look back......
