Here is a 50 degree parallel sided smoother I just finished.
This was not as difficult as I thought it might be.
Although tedious at times, it went pretty smooth.
I substituted the steel pins with 1/4" brass rod so they would
dissapear in the bronze casting.
The castings, while machined still require quite a bit of work
but I suppose thats part of the fun.
The machines I used were a dremel, drill press, belt sander, and
a buffing wheel with various compounds.
a fair amount of file work was required.
The castings (I'm also building an 18" panel plane cocobolo infill) took
a couple months to get here, but the owner Bob, is a real nice guy and I think he works alone.
After experiencing a dissapointment with another company, I was a little nervous when my order was taking so long, but Bob came through and I
would not hesitate to order again. Thanks for looking, Gene

That's a beauty! Can you tell us how many man hours were required?

Thanks for the kind words, Terry, probably about 30 hrs. but this was my first
one.
I actually planed on using Cocobolo for the infill. The walnut was a practice run. I liked the look and feel so I used it.
The panel plane I'm working on now is going much faster. probably end up
being around 10 - 16 hrs.

Gene that looks great- what bedding angle did you use - it looks like you have a nice sized handle and I know that can be impacted by the angle. Barry

That must be one of those new Neander multi-function/combo tools...you can plane wood and also use it as a mirror to shave! :D :D :D

Seriously, that's fine work...a beautiful tool.

nice work Gene, although the pictures came out a little dark, I think all the gloss on the plane confused the camera's light meteres
Looking forward to your next one.

Just curious how you were making out with that infill? Was it a cast body from James bay tool co also? Thanks Jim
