Just found this at Amazon if anybody is interested. If I had someplace for it, I'd have it.

Buy it and "store" in my garage. I'd be more than willing to help you out.:D

It says that it's 2 hp, 3 phase 115V. That's a really really odd combination, especially for a 20 inch planer.

Hopefully, the labeling is all wrong and it's single phase 3 or 5 hp.

Actually, I couldn't resist it and ordered one for myself anyway. :D It will go into my storage unit until I can find a way to work it into my shop.

I called Amazon because of the odd combination and a coouple other inconsistencies in the description. She told me per the Mfg catalog, it's a 5hp, 220v 3ph planer. Tough to beat at that price.

How will you deal with the 3 phase? Thanks for posting the deal. Bill

I'll look into that when I actually set it up, which will be when I get/build a bigger shop, hopefully in the next year.

Set it up with a VFD. They take 220 single phase in and provide a "3 phase" output to the motor. Just run the machine with the VFD set at 60hz.

I was hoping it might be practical to buy this and replace the motor with the one from the 3HP 1 phase version. I called JET (WMH tool group) to inquire, and they said I'd need a new magnetic switch and the motor. The magnetic switch is part# JWP208-087 and costs $201.32, and the motor is part#JWP15H-412 and costs $428.08. So, doesn't look like this will be a good option.

Anyway, I just thought I'd post my findings to save anyone else who may have been considering this option the trouble of researching it.

When I looked it said:

Price:$1,699.99

So, I'm assuming that it was cheaper this morning.

WOW! Yeah, it does say that now. I spent a lot of time on the phone this morning trying to verify what I was getting because the specifications on the page describe a 13" planer, which I wasn't interested in. I asked the sales woman how long the price would be good for, and she told me she has seen prices change as she was speaking to a customer. Wonder if it was priced wrong since the description is wrong and they changed it after my order. They show 4 available now. It showed 5 when I ordered.

Don - for purposes of your entertainment - it was listed as $840 when I looked.

About half price. They must've wanted to move a couple of machines.

Their pricing strategies sure are odd sometimes.

I had to add it to my cart in order for the lower price to show up, otherwise it was listed at the higher price!!!!!!!

I've noticed several threads regarding super sales on amazon.com. Are these seasonal sales or does amazon always have a random good deal on something going on?

I don't believe a VFD is going to be an option, I'm not aware of a 5hp VFD that takes single phase input. A phase converter, either rotary or static will be your only option unless you have native 3 phase available.

A motor swap with a factory motor is going to negate any savings, though you could build a rotary or static phase converter for cheap if you like a challenge and work hard at scrounging.

I have a rotary phase converter with a 7 hp idler motor.

Other than the motor there is about $15 worth of part in it.2 or 3 capacitors and the most expensive part is the switch. Used 3 phase motors are VERY cheap because there is no market for them.
