Hello,

I have recently joined the AAW and received the club’s winter magazine. It featured an article on pens that interested me very much, I seem to be on a pen turning obsession lately. I was very inspired by the feature article and some recent postings by Scott Greaves to try a new pen design, the Platinum Series Patriot design, from Craft Supplies in Utah.

Here are the results of my morning turning today,

From left to right the woods are bocote, curly koa, amboyna burl and birds eye maple (2). The finish is Mylands Friction Polish (first usage for me), applied over a final 600 sanded surface.

I added a Large Twist pen here for scale. The Patriot has a nice balance and weight, I like the twist top.

It’s a simple kit, nicely detailed parts and easy to assemble.

Jim,

Your pens look great and yes it is an adictive hobby. Where did you get your curly koa blank from?

Hi Kent,

Thanks for the comments,

I found a source for curly Koa on Ebay, I won some blanks there and have since bought more from him. The quality is very good, you can email him at wdbay@earthlink.net, let them know I sent you.

Take care,
Jim

Hi Jim!

Nice looking pens! I just love the color of that Amboyna one!

Thanks for the mention of my articles and the AAW. I think joining the AAW is a great resource for any woodturner!

I finally got permission from the AAW to post a PDF of that article on a website. I think I'll see if I can put a link to it in a message.

Take care!

Scott.

Thanks very much for the kind words, You are one of my turning inspirations, I love the pen work you do...I am on a pen kick right now and I must say that some of your work has been the catalyst of that.

Take care,
Jim
