View Full Version : Delta DC 580 Blades - Sharpening and Replacement

I have a WW buddy, who is not a creeker, who has a Delta DC580 planer. He's had it for several years and not replaced, turned over, or sharpened the blades, and we just got burned trying to put a highly figured curly maple panel through it - huge tearout.

I ran a board of the same material through a my Delta 22-580 (lunchbox planer) and basically had no tearout - its blades are sharp, but it's not a fan of 10+ inch wide maple boards.

He has the following questions (and so do I, since I regularly use his machine):
1) Does anyone on here have a recommendation for a sharpening service? Especially if you have a DC580.
2) Are there any aftermarket blades that are better than the originals? If so, what are they?

He said the blades are sharpened on both sides, so we're going to turn them over, but he wants to get a spare set so that when these need to be sent to sharpen, he doesn't have to go without a planer for several weeks.

Thanks in advance for your help -
Dave
