There's no law that says the pieces making up the bowl have to be "two-toned" like the first couple I did. These are from a glue-up of mostly walnut, with thin strips of maple, jatoba, and walnut as an accent stripe:

(The solid walnut center in this one is a plug, installed due to a massive brain-fart while turning the inside bottom: I lost count of how many of the solid layers I had gone through, and it funnelled on me.)
For that matter, there's no law that says you have to use multiple species of wood:

It doesn't show well in this picture, but there is still a (much more subtle) spiral effect, due to differences in reflectance between endgrain and sidegrain.
