My son and his wife are expecting their first child later this month. A while back we offered to make them at least part of the baby furniture for the soon to be nursery. After a bit of searching to see something they like they settled on a design and we worked out the details. They wanted the top to be removeable so that they could use the dressing table later as just a dresser without the changing pad rails. There was also some discussion about making it into an hutch type dresser or to have a bookshelf unit on top. I came up with a way to have the chaging pad located on the top and have rails on 3 sides so it wouldn't slide off and then remove a false top and have a finished top under it that would be completely flat without any holes.
The dressing table is made of solid poplar and painted with a white enamel paint to coordinate with the decor in the rest of the room.
The removeable top is made from 1/4" thick plywood with a 3/4 thick x 1-1/4 tall lip around the perimeter. The changing pad retaining rails are attached from the bottom side with wood screws
