Malcom Tibbetts was kind enough to get me pointed in the right direction and this is what I ended up with. 60 pieces of walnut and maple that are 7" high and 6" at the widest point. Danish oil finish, to be buffed in a couple of days. All 4 photos are of the same piece from different view points.

I also found out that Malcom's definition of "very easy" is a lot different than mine! Thanks to Malcom for inspiration and his help and to you Creekers for looking. :)

Absolutly top notch Robert. I'm jealous:p I won't be able to turn for about another 3 weeks when my new shop is built. So have you given up turning solid stuff?;) Actually It's great to see you progress in your segmenting. You've come a long ways in no time at all and you have great style too.

Okay Robert, I didn't say, "so easy even a caveman could do it." Nice job with your first attempt at this technique. By now, you should be seeing all types of possibilities.

Way Cool!!!
I'm thinking about trying a segmented bowl but I don't have a jointer or planer or even drum sander to finish the edges. Is it absolutely necessary? I really like your design.

Doug Jones,
Are you talking about flattening the rings? You can do it on the lathe. Would not use a planer or jointer in any case.

Nicely done Robert! You could do a lot worse than to be under the influence of Malcolm!

Robert, this is an awesome piece. I have glued up several like this, but I always turn it end grain. Here is a pic of one that I posted in January. It gives a completly different design. Just something you might want to try in the future.

Nice piece. For some reason the side with the horizontal stripes makes me think of a pregnant lady.
