The Gulf Coast Woodturners Association hosts a weekend of turning which they call a "Spring Retreat" for their club members and the public.
Last year, I showed up at the last minute with some old tools and a few new unhandled turning tools. Got into a beginners hands-on group, using the only lathe the rest of the beginners were afraid to try. It was the Clubs 20 or 24" Oneway lathe. The others stepped up to the jet mini lathes, and I got to start on the WHite Monster. Gosh it was so smooth and great. The instructores showed me how to sharpen my gouges, and warned me about overheating some 20 year old tools I happened to have. They showed me how to follow a bevel, some outside, inside, spindle truning, etc. Once they stepped away for more than a few minutes, I turned several of my first tool handles for some P&N gouges.
I can't tell you all how much I learned, it really openned me up to turning and expanding my skills.
Anyway, the event is a couple of weeks away again for this year and thought I would post it here. Hope to see some of you there. I'm sure you will enjoy it and probably learn alot.
The email posting is:

Thanks guys.

Sounds like a great group of people you have down there. Wish I was a little closer. Same state just about 6-8 hours away. I'll be there some time though. I hope to come to Houston in the summer and maybe visit a couple of you slackers on the gulf coast!:D
