I presently own a Jet 1642 (Miracle Whip not Mayo) and would like to attach an outboard turning tool rest to it. My question is - does anyone make such a beast for this particulr lathe or should I be entertaining the thought of purchasing the Vicmarc outboard attachment and adapting it to fit. Seeking advice from the knowledgable multitude.

Jet actually makes the outboard tool rest. I believe the number is: 708349-OTS-42: JET OUTBOARD TURNING STAND</B>

The Jet is around 400 bucks.

That seems a bit pricey. What diameter does it allow you to turn?

Somewhere in the 26" range. More inportantly it will let me turn 16"- 20" bowls/platters. Still with where I'm at dollarwise it is considerably cheaper than the purchase of a much larger lathe.

Bill & Bill,
Thanks for the info! Granted that $400 is cheap compared to the multi-thousand $ alternatives, will still have to consider doing it "home made" if the craving to go bigger than 16" gets too strong.

Richard if u decide to do a homemade stand dont skimp on it ..make sure that it is well built and HEAVY...if u dont it will walk all over! and the vibration is terrible.
A friend of mine has the same lathe ..he is a new turner and decided to make his own ...well he made it way to light..out of 1" round stock ..now its heavy to pack around but not to use on the lathe..even with tons of weight loaded on the bottom it still walked .
So I got together with him and we constructed another one only this time we used 3" square tube ...made a tripod affair and filled the tubes with cement..this helped tremendously and now works great..no walking or vibration..rock solid..so like I said dont skimp on it and it will work fine and a lot less then $400.00

Friend of mine wants me to take his Delta outboard turning rest and use it on my PM. I am doubtful as to the advisability of this setup and have no way to check it easily because of the 500 miles separation between us. Has anyone used this combination? Inputs desired, please, before I spend the money. Phil

You could make something like this. Not fancy but it works.

There are 3 nuts welded to the bottom edge with bolts as feet that can be adjusted to level the stand to the floor.

Same principle as the Vicmark stand, heckuva lot cheaper. ;)

Travis what do you usually do when reversing or rechuck after roughing/drying as you've obviously no provision for a tailstock?

Thanks

Bob, I haven't re-turned any of the few things I've turned outboard. I use my vacuum chuck for reversing.

Thought this might help, it pictures a 1642 as well as PM. Go to Outboard:
