chatter tool

Has anyone made a chatter tool? I've tried bandsaw blades, hacksaw blades, and whatever else I could think of and have had no luck. I've looked at alot of threads dealing with this, and can't seem to come up with anything that works consistantly. Thanks for the help. Paul

Keith, thats the exact link I've been experimenting with. It works fine on hard Maple like in the pic, but no good on a softer wood such as Holly. I guess I can't use the Holly.

Sorry Paul, thats the only place I've seen one. I have a chatter tool but have never used it.

Bonnie Klein uses it on holly all the time in her movies... don't know why it wouldn't work!

Chattering tool works on end grain hard wood only. You can't get a crisp pattern on soft wood.

It will work fine on Holly, do the following.

1- The blade should only extend 1/2 to 3/4 inch from holder
2- Use a sharp very small burr (a large burr will tear out the wood)
3- Raise the tool rest so when the blade tip is held at a 45 degree
decline it is at the same height as the works center.
4- After cutting the chatter, burnish the chatter with a small dowel
(rounded tip) at 500 rpm
