Saw the strangest thing today (Sunday) while surf fishing in the Cape May,NJ area. Noticed off to the left of us, something way out in the ocean, approximately 600 feet or so, a damned deer swimming around. Apparently, it had been swimming for at least two miles and finally came ashore about sixty yards away from us. Don’t believe we’ll ever see something like that again. The addresses below are in sequence of their occurrence I think. In the first two or three, you can barely see it, as it was so far out from shore. The final two are of it once it came ashore.

Oh yeah, by the way, I caught my first ever Drum species of fish. A nice little speciman that weighed just under twenty pounds. Good eating fish and I gave it to some freinds of my brother.
Also nailed a small striped bass Saturday night.

No fish story there, Fred! The real McCoy! A very nice meal in your hand! And yes, deer do swim when they need to. Many animals are like that.

Didn't that deer see Jaws? There have been reports of elk and moose swimming out to Isle Royale National Park but last I checked the Great Lakes aint got no sharks to worry about.

Fred,
I've seen deer swim in the small pond in my area but never in the ocean.
Nice drum. We don't get them this far north, but we're still waiting for the season's first keeper striper. Could be any day now.:)

I've never seen them myself, but there are occassional reports in the local paper here with photos of deer being pulled from the water far from shore. More than one has been rescued off the ice in the winter time too. They also find dead ones along the shore from time to time.
