"Rocky Road Ahead "

I thought this would be an appropriate posting for Earth Day.
Whether you believe that the earth’s warming is temporary or a real danger, it’s pretty hard to ignore the changes due to the “greenhouse effect” – “the rapid retreat of glaciers in Greenland, Alaska, the Himalayas, the Antarctic Peninsula, and on high tropical mountains; the thinning and disappearance of sea ice in the Arctic Ocean during summer; the melting of permafrost in Canada, Alaska, and Siberia; and the rise of sea level and an increase in extreme weather.” (Larry O'Hanlon for the Discovery Channel)

I've got to say that's probably one of the most amazing works I've ever seen - period. I've seen your other amazing pieces, but the imagination, thought, and execution of this one truly makes it a work of art.

Malcom, that is just incredible. The imagination in the design is great, and the execution is incredible. You also make these pretty quickly considering how intricate and perfect they are.

And to think that Clint Eastwood ran for mayor because you couldn't eat something like that in public!

Interesting piece, Malcolm. But if you guys want to stop global warming you need to read Sheryl Crow's solution. She has it all figured out...

Thanks everyone for the nice comments.

Mark, what's with the "you guys"? I think we're all in this thing together. :) I do have to say that I think I'll draw the line a little higher on the list of things we can do than Ms. Crow (although I do like her music).

Touche... we are definitely stewards (should be, anyway) of God's creation.

I try to help keep the temps down by running the A/C all thru the summer...;)

That is indeed an unusual piece and extremely well done.

However, I object to your statement that "it is pretty hard to ignore the changes due to the greenhouse effect."

Not everyone, even (especially) in the scientific community agree that greenhouse gasses cause global warming. Using SMC and the turning forum as a platform to forward such a controversial and politically charged topic surely violates the TOS. I'm surprised the mods here haven't moved to the moderator's forum where it belongs.

Malcolm,

Your creativity and work defy words! Exquisite execution, and beautiful!

Global warming is mostly a natural phenomenon that has cyclical manifestation and I just wish the politicians did not find every excuse they can to tax, spend and take what we work so hard for.

The artic ice has rebounded nicely this year according to reports I've heard.

Gentlemen - please note that this thread is over 3 years old!

Also, when this post was started - the Global Warming issue existed but had yet to become a hot-button topic on SMC. Since then - any threads on the subject have been removed in order to prevent additional global warming.

Please - NO MORE global warming or political comments - or this thread will be locked.

Malcolm, another wonderful, awe inspiring turning (don't know how you think of it / do it :o). That said, not a big fan or believer in 'global warming'...I think we're just going through a(nother) natural cycle the earth is constantly going through. We haven't been here long enough to make grand pronouncements, IMO.

Threads, and pieces like this, make me want to go back through the Turners forum again. I have looked at hundreds of threads, but missed this one! Great piece! Amazing optical illusions.
