8" wide and just shy of 5" tall. I was trying to keep some of the sapwood on this one for a contrast in color and the sapwood ended up darkening up on me quite a bit as it dried. Antique oil is the finish.

Comments/critiques/suggestions/opinions welcomed.

Mark I really like this one. It is a beauty. Must be something about walnut. Nice job.

I like the sap wood a little darker. It stills adds contrast but doesn't overpower the piece. Very well balanced. You have a winner there......

Wow, Mark. Another beautiful walnut piece! I really like the form on this one. Great lines on the side walls and the slight rise at the top nicely defines the opening.

Fantastic!

Cothren knocks another one out of the park! Whatever you've done to or with that sapwood is perfect along with the form and finish. You're on a roll!

Beautiful form and finish but what makes this stand out - at least to me - is the flow of the grain. Very nice work - as usual!

Mark,

How many applications of antique oil did you use and did you buff it?

Mark Cothren

Dick, this was two coats of antique oil and yes, it is buffed.

Mark,
I think the antique oil gave your piece an amber tint as most oils do. If you want to keep the contrast in the future try lacquer or a non-yellowing poly for the finish.

By the way, I love the piece just the way it is!

Thanks Dick, but the sapwood coloring had actually changed before any finish was ever applied. I think it is the tannin (or whatever is in the heartwood - the stuff that makes my tub of DNA look like coffee) that eventually overtakes the sapwood. But I may be wrong... anyway, the oil didn't change the color of the sapwood or the heartwood. At least not that my eye could see.
