I have lot's of BIG pictures to frame, and decided to make my own frames (good practice). MLCS so far are all I know of in picture frame bits. I didn't see any on Holbrens site (via searching picture frame, or various parts of that).

Who all do you all recommend?

Thanks

I don't have any bits called picture frame bits but both these sets are molding bits that may work for you. They average from 1' to 2" in cutter length.

Randal,

I don't have an answer for you about specific picture frame profile bits. However, there is another way. Some of your standard bits will produce shapes that, when combined, yield very nice frames. I own a wonderful old paperback book "Making Picture Frames in Wood," by Manly Banister. (Sterling Publishing Co. Inc. New York 1973--probably out of print.) However, he has some good profiles which I have attached below. I also included a mahogany frame I made using one of his profiles.

Randal, here is another page of router profiles with more complex shapes. There are even more complex shapes. Email me if you want to go in this direction, and I will scan them in in high resolution and email them to you.

I concur with Bert...often, multiple cutter profiles and straight/bevel cuts on the TS combine to a very nice picture frame contour. And...you don't necessarily have to use one piece of wood. You can build them up just as you might a crown detail on a mantel or in a room.

I received several requests for good reproductions of the router profiles, so I scanned in most of the ones in the book. You can access them at:

The double roundover bit should make nice frames.

Got back from work last night to try to check this. Fell asleep bringing up the computer, woke up when my head hit the keyboard (ouch).

Just a note of THANKS! Given me LOT's of ideas.
