Okay, got enough requests for rattles that I NEED to buy a couple captive ring chisels. Can anybody suggest a brand and a store? I don't know why, but I'm having a hard time tracking them down

Also, what is a good lathe drill chuck? My short stroke drill press just doesn't cut it for deeper than 2" holes. Figure if I get a chuck for my lathe I 'might' be able to drill a longer straight hole....

Captive ring tools are available from a number of places. I bought a couple from hartvilletool.com (http://www.hartvilletool.com/product/12103) when they were on sale last month. Mine are Crown, but the Sorbys are good also. I found out that there is a learning curve to these things and I have definitely NOT mastered it yet! :o

As for a drill chuck, I picked up a Jacobs chuck from grizzly.com (http://www.grizzly.com/catalog/2007/Main/323); I had to buy an adapter (also from Griz) to make it fit my MT2 on my lathe.

EDIT: Noticing your location, I would also mention highlandwoodworking.com (http://www.highlandwoodworking.com/index.asp?PageAction=PRODSEARCH&txtSearch=captive&Page=1), based in Atlanta.

Hi Bonnie

Lee Valley Tools has one. I do mine with a skew. I've also made a couple by sharpening an allen key and mounting it in a handle.

Thank you all for your suggestions :) I went ahead and ordered from Hartville since all totaled it ran the cheapest. Of course I had to order 'extras' lol I was just going to continue on using my skew chisel making the rings. But with immediate orders for 11 rattle... no way! lol

I keep hearing about people making chisels out of hex keys and other things. How do you do it?
