As stated in this thread (http://http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=56300) I need to get a new desk for home. If I'm going to build it myself, it will have to be pretty simple so I can get it done in the next few weeks. I'm looking for something more traditional, and I'll probably place it in the center of the room so I'm not staring at a wall all day.

Matt -

I have used Norm's student desk plan for my daughter's desk. Here is a link to a more 'adult' looking desk.

The pictures are the partially Norm's version and partially mine. It is cherry with maple panels. cherry top wrapped with hard maple.

Finish is 2 coats of BLO, Shellac, 3 coats of waterlox original and finished with paste wax.

Congrats on the new gig Matt!
Are you going to be recieving customers or just doing business???
I prefer the solid core door between a saw horse and a fill cabinet myself.

Plenty of space
Easy to move
Drill holes.
Mount lamps & Modems
Hide from my employees.
Can get real fancy with the door, file and saw horse.

No, I don't expect that customers will come to my house.

Are you going to be using a computer? If so, a laptop of desktop? If you will be using a computer, I suggest you consider wire management. Nothing would ruin the look a nice desk more than having a nest of wires showing in the middle of the room. I do my own designs and I don't do plans, but I did build mine to hide all the wires. I have a compartment for the desktop computer, and a wire tray that holds all the wires out of sight..joe

Yes, I'll be using the computer probably 100% of the time. However, it looks like I won't be building a desk. Call me what you will but we couldn't pass up the desk and drawer unit at Staples for $86 and $56 respectively, marked down from 3-4x that. Considering what I have to get done in the next few weeks, that was too good to pass up, and for what we paid if it only lasts a couple years I'll be thrilled. Then I'll have more time to plan a proper woodworker's desk.
