I would like to present a picture of one of my recent works. A scalloped walnut bowl I've been working on for some time now. I've probably got about 20 hours or more in this piece and brought it in tonight only to realize I need to go back and hit it with some more sandpaper.

I couldn't resist sharing a picture though.

Very nice work Raymond! Beautiful wood but it looks like you have a serious wobble problem with your lathe!!

Thanks for the comments.

Bill and Jonathan, the setup for making the bowl was pretty easy. I first turned the bowl to about 3/4" thick. I then used my indexing wheel to lay out lines every 45 degrees on the inside and out. After laying out the lines I connected the point at the rim on one line to the point in the center of the bowl on the third line over on the outside of the bowl. This gave me references for my high points on the outside of the bowl.

I then used a Foredom carver to remove material consistently between the lines. After that I used lines on the inside of the bowl that told me where the valleys were to carve the inside of the scallops.

The whole task is fairly easy. It's just time consuming.

Very nice piece for sure Raymond. 20 hours hugh? Shoot, I'd have spent 20 hours just getting TO the carving point. Congrats.

That's going to be an outstanding piece once you're satisfied with the sanding! Great work!
