We have a new Member who is in the process of creating custom aprons for The Creek. The aprons will be available in both leather and a canvas like material that is soft and wears well. Our aprons will sport the SMC logo and can be custom laser engraved to include your name.

I should have the first apron in hand in the next few days, as soon as I receive the first apron I will provide pictures and details. Please respond in this thread if you may be interested, we would like to know if there is any serious interest. I know that cost and design are factors so I am just interested in a rough number of Members who would be in the market for a very high quality apron.

The SawMill Creek Aprons are ready to order

Yup, very interested in a turners apron. My current one is falling apart to the point that Sue has threatened to throw it away on me. Worse yet she has intimated that she might wash it on me and remove the years of character that have been slowly accumulating.

I'm interested. Question though on the Turners apron. Might it have a neck cuff to keep chips out ? Oh, and would you be lasering names on the canvas ?

Good idea Keith !

My wife has been wanting to get me an leather apron - good timing.

I'ld be interested in a leather apron provided it's comfortable, especially in the kneck strap.

Keith Outten
04-16-2007, 1:44 PM
The first apron sample will not have a neck cuff or pockets but we can get them made any way we want them. CW McClellen has offered to customize our aprons to suit.

What is a must have?
Pencil Pockets?
Neck Cuff?
Pockets in the lower apron?
Remember that the final cost is based on the options we want so we need to all agree on the style.

There will be a leather oval that is sewn onto each apron with the SMC logo and your name if you prefer. This will be standard on both the leather and the canvas material aprons.

Adj Neck cuff and breast pocket.
I can improv. the rest.

Bob Noles

Keith,

For a turner's apron, the neck cuff would be very important. Pockets need to have either flap type covers or located on the rear side of the apron to keep the chips out. Pencil/ruler pocket on the front breast is a plus.

Hope this helps.

Yes, I would be interested in one.

Hi Tyler,
How about a custom SCM thong?? I think there is a huge market waiting for them. John.

Kieth,
Count me in for one. I like a couple of pencil pockets for scribing knife and small ruler + pencils, larger pockets for larger tools and sawdust. How about a small pocket to hold the DC remote?? Thanks, John.

Since I don't turn I'd prefer lower pockets & a pencil pocket anywhere. Make mine leather!

As a new turner, I would be interested in a good apron.

Jim Becker

I could be interested in a leather one...but the comfortable neck cuff is not optional. I'll not use a turning smock without one. It's one of the reasons I like the Packard Woodworks smocks. A pencil pocket is fine, but not required for me...a lot of folks like them, however.

I'd be interested in one with a neck cuff......probably leather....depends on price, of course.

Maybe on the pencil/ruler pocket it could be made loose at the bottom so it hinges at the top. That way when you drop your pencil and bend over to pick it up you don't dump the scale on the floor. Just a suggestion.

For turning, an adjustable neck cuff is a necessity to keep the chips out. Personally I prefer canvas because it's a bit cooler to wear in warm weather and it does breathe. A covered or flapped breast pocket would be nice, but wouldn't be a deal breaker with or without.

CW McClellan has donated two aprons for a FreeStuff Drawing. He has shipped 3 aprons to me so I will be posting pictures as soon as we receive them.

I'm going to send him a link to the thread so he can keep up with everyone's comments and requests.

Good luck to everyone on the FreeStuff SawMIll Creek apron drawings.

I could be interested in one to, but like others said, it's got to have a comfy neck cuff. Not sure which, I'd have to see some pictures first.

I'd go for the canvas version. Prefer just a shop apron tho' and not a turners smock.

Philip Duffy
04-20-2007, 5:49 AM
My vote, and $$ would be for a turner's smock, lightweight canvas, with a neck closure and one pencil pocket only, up high. The neck must not be a source of irritation so I am thinking it is lined with some smooth material. Sleeves to the elbow only. Thanks for the effort. Phil

Are they going to be available in large size for gorillas like Bill Grumbine and me? How about a 4X Tall.

An Update,

CW McClellen sent me 3 aprons, I received them yesterday. Two of the aprons are to be donated for FreeStuff drawings which I will try to post as soon as I get my personal apron laser engraved and get pictures, I purchased the first cowhide apron. The leather is very smooth and surprisingly light, I may only wear mine on Sundays :)

CW also called me this afternoon and is willing to make custom aprons for everyone here at SMC. When the FreeStuff drawing thread is posted CW will be answering questions and taking orders. I will hold off engraving the two aprons untill the winners have claimed their prizes so I can engrave their names as my part of the drawing. The 3" by 4" oval leather patch will be sewn on each apron and will have the SMC logo and your name engraved.

Big sizes are not a problem and leather thongs are also available, seriously CW will make them if you will wear them :)

Oh yeah he can make custom bikinis for the ladies, we don't want anyone to feel left out :)

Here is you chance to have it your way, I have already let CW know that I want a leather carpenters apron.

Prices start at:
$50.00 for cowhide leather aprons.
$40.00 for horsehide aprons.
$25.00 for the canvas style.

You will have to negotiate with CW the price for a custom apron, possibly he will offer some suggested prices for adding extra pockets, knit necklines, etc.

Joe,

I'll have to take a picture of my apron tomorrow in front of the ShopBot. I would hate to get my new apron dirty and dusty using it for lathe work :)

Here They Are

Here is the link to our SawMill Creek Store and the first group of aprons.
I am still looking for the SMC vector logo so I can provide a picture of the finished engraved logo. I'm working on it :)

http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?p=577455&posted=1#post577455

Those of you who have been waiting for SMC coffee cups your wait is almost over. Jackie and I will be ordering our own coffee cup heat press this evening and will be able to provide dish washer safe coffee cups that are personalized with the SMC logo and your name in just a few days.

I am interested in a short sleved canvas smock not an apron because I want the coverage. A true apron will still allow my clothes to be covered with chips and dust. :)

Keith Outten

David,

Send a PM to CW McClellan, he can make just about any style apron you want.
