Thanks for all the help and advice on my decision as to order the PM or the Jet.
I went into the store, 60% sure I was going to order the ugly gold model, but being a pretty new turner, I just could not get that $1100 additional out of my checkbook. I must have been in Woodcraft an hour and finally pulled the trigger on the 1642, for $1430 net.

I got great advice and opinions, and I read them all.

Congrats Mike. You are going to like that 1642. Did you get the 1 1/2 or 2 hp model? I went thru the same thing about a month ago. I finally ended up with Nova DVR XP because of room. I just could not fit the 1642 in my shop. Anyway enjoy Mike. Post lots of pictures.

I got the 1.5hp.
The 2hp was $300 more, and if I went that way, I prolly would have gone for the PM.
I may still end up with that mustard someday.

You will enjoy using the 1642, it's a solid machine. With a subtle hint from my wife, I too, made the jump to the 1642 a few months back and have been impressed with how well my turnings have progressed...well, not really... but it sure is alot more fun on a new machine! Have fun turning.

I'm sure you'll like the lathe. I went through a similar process during December and ended up buying the 1642-1.5 for $1399 after the rebate and Equipment Sales and Surplus threw in the bed extension for free. I would have preferred the 2hp, but the price difference between them was significant enough and I do not forsee an extra .5 hp as being a significant difference as I don't plan to ever use coring equipment.

If you don't have wood larger than 16" diameter, you'll never miss the PM. My 1642-2hp has been up to everything I've asked.

If you do a lot of large turnings, see Dominic Greco's article about "sand box" to add weight to the base.
