Hi,

I am finished my pen turning till fall now, back to furniture.

Awhile ago I bought a couple of Lee Valley spoke shave kits. They make a large and a small kit, so I made a pair.

I chose some curly claro walnut for my shave bodies.

These were fun to make, the wood is a matched pair from a cut off from some pepper mills I am about to make.

The sole plates that came in the kit were brass, I thought replacing them with some rosewood looked better.

The finish is three coast of shellac followed by a carnauba wax application with my Beal buffing system.

It was fun to make some tools that fit my hands, shaping the handles with rasps and files was a very satisfying process. I think I will make another set with radiused soles.

I am taking a Windor Stool class in a few weeks, they should get a good work out then!

Jim,
You chose wisely. Those are the shaves of a carpenter. :) Beautiful !!

Hi Jim,

Fun to make, aren't they? I've made a couple of the larger ones and taught a guild class on making them a year ago in March. Mine were Cocobolo and Black Walmut. I think the curly Claro has a bit more pizzaz and character than my plain walnut. Great job!!

Great job. I like the handmade stuff beacuse you can shape them to your own hands as you go. Then using them is much more fun than a mass-produced model.

Thanks Every one,

I know that some of us like to make our own tools, it's fun as you have mentioned and it makes them also very personal. A kit like this is a great start, I know that I shaped this set for my hands and that they will become very familiar to me in time.

Again, Thanks for your kind words and thoughts. If you are considering making a set like this and have a question I would be very happy to offer any assistance you might thinks you need.;)

Nice shaves Jim :D
I made a couple from Ash and Cherry, they don't look half as good as these. Perhaps I should make use of a block of cocobolo I have lying around looking for a project.
