View Full Version : ROS on plywood?

I've read somewhere that it's not recommended to use a ROS on ply, handsanding only. I'm building some shop cabinets using some BORG ply (I know, I know...but it is cheap for a newb who still mis-cuts a lot) I want to "experiment" with finishing, a couple I plan to paint and a couple I'll coat with poly.

Thanks for any input!

Well I think the problem is when sanding veneered ply (like birch or oak) the ROS can be aggressive if you let it and sand through the veneer. But judicious application of the ROS at higher grits is just fine. I do it all the time and no problems. Just be aware of the possibilities. :)

If it is regular A-C ply, don't sweat it either. Just sand away.

Almost all plywood is factory sanded to about 180 grit. Therefore, all you need to do is hand sand it lightly with 180 grit to prepare it for finishing. With today's very thin veneers, you run the real risk of a sand through if you use any power sanders at all. They're dangerous and just not necessary.
