Our club, Golden Triangle Woodturners, will be doing a workshop to make 3 wheel steady rests. I need to find a good place to get a bunch of wheels. Any sugestions for sources or a better wheel than the inline skate wheels?

Ever tried making them from UHMW plastic without bearings?

I think it is hard to find a better wheel that is as reasonably priced.

Your best bet is to look at Goodwill or Salvation Army stores...they ahve some descent pairs sometimes. If you want new...sporting goods stores sell replacement wheels. Just make sure you get one with the bearings since they sell some w/o it.

In our area we have a place called play it again sports. They have a lot of inline skates. You might have one in your area too.:)

It is hard to imagine a better wheel than the inline skate wheels since they provide some cushion and have quality bearings. You ought to be able to get new ones for about five dollars each.

There is always ebay if you have time.

Got mine off of ebay. I think a few other folks here have gotten them from ebay as well. I would add that it would be good to have an extra set or two of wheel bearings..just in case. :D

Bought a pair of inline skates from Target for $12.98 on sale. Gave me 8 wheels.

Anyone care to post their pictures of steady rests? I have some wheels laying aroung that I could use to make one.

Roughly done compared to others but works.

Bernie I thought I was the only one the did stuff like that. The three little flat batteries that power the laser in my homemade hollowing rig are $3.25 each from Ray-o-vac so I buy the cheap twiawan flashlight with 4 batteries included for $2 and throw away the flashlight.
