Hi all... The newest issue of Shopsmith has an article about making bowls with a router, bowl and tray bit, and collet extension. Here is the first I have made and I would like to see some that you have made. Mine is Red Elm and Maple. It is 14"x4" The finish is BLO and after that dries, Minwax water based poly.

a router, bowl and tray bit, and collet extension. .

I never saw this trick before. Intertesting and way cool.

Did you start with solid block of glued up lumber?

Should be Woodsmith. Very nice job, I made a couple of jewelry boxs few years back using the same technique. Here's a link to video on the technique.http://www.woodsmith.com/issues/170/videos/routed-bowls/

Lance,

Very cool. Making one of those has been on my to-do list since I saw the article. Did making the bowl go as smoothly as they show in the article and the video? Any tips for those that haven't tried it yet?

Way cool! I guess I still prefer using my lathe, albeit, might be just a bit tough to get that exact profile! Nice job, Lance. :)

BTW, changed the title for you. :)

Yes ... its fairly easy to do. One thing I did notice... as you plunge, move your router to the side instead of plunging straight down. The bit cuts better and doesnt burn.
