Well here is the most recent piece I've completed. About 4 months in the making. All q-sawn red oak. The bonet top is hammer veneered, and all the moulding was cut by hand. Most of the surface is hand planed, and most of the joinery was cut by hand. About 215 hours into this one, and had to wrap it up before I head to OKC for the next 8 weeks. Feedback welcome, and I'll post better ones once the photographer takes his pics. Mine are just O.K. There will be a huge beveled mirror in the back and the granite top is gorgeous. The piece is 7 1/2' tall and over 7' wide. It's about 22" deep. The bonnet top has a bent lam for the inside arch and the front is quartermatched, shop sawn veneer over solid oak.

Here's an overall shot. The hardware is all bronzed cash register hardware.

And here are a couple shots with the occupant of the back bar.

Steve,
Nice job! I am not one to usually like red oak all that much, but you've managed to to a great job with the QS variety here. Then again, anything "bar" related gets my attention...LOL
I've worked on my hand skills to try an "all" neander project (other than use a of a table saw) and I am almost done with it. I can only hope to get the overall quality level you show here.

Well done!!!

Man, if that’s the “back bar” what the heck does the front bar look like!
Beautiful work!

What Bruce said! Wow! Outstanding, Steve!!!

BTW, the white balance is what's causing your pictures to get "amber" under the lighting conditions...if your camera has an settings for different types of lighting, try them out. You can also get a filter that deals with flourescent lighting for many cameras.

Steve,
That is gorgeous. I really like the QS oak. How did you finish it, it has a nice color, and the ray flecks really stand out.

Steve,

I've never seen oak look so good. What coloring processes did you use?
This really is a nice piece and it's in a style and period that you don't see worked in a lot these days. Very refreshing.

The oak was stained to match some existing pieces. Basically it is one coat of GF Mahogany, followed by two coats of GF Red Mahogany, and then 7 coats of Semigloss lacquer rubbed out. The figure on the bonnet top is extraordinary. The color is actually pretty close to what it is in real life. This piece is pretty dark. But of course my photo's look pretty poor. I shake really bad and ended up shooting about 60 shots to get 7 or 8 I could use. Thanks for the kind words.

Steve, wonderful piece as always. If you have a flash on your camera it will take care of the white balance.

Steve, that is a magnificent piece. Your craftsmanship shines. I love the figure, especially on the top piece. Almost makes me want to go get some oak and start playing. I've been working mostly in cherry and maple, but this has me thinking...

Thanks for showing.

"The bonet top is hammer veneered"

What does hammer veneered mean?

Absolutely beautiful workmanship!

Absolutely top notch work, Steve. In all departments - creatively, constructional, finish and composition.

Thanks for the info about the staining.

Awesome work Steve. It still boggles my mind to see you veneering pieces of this scale...absolutely hair-raising. Well done!
