Finishing a hardwood floor

We are taking up our rugs after 25 years. Any idea on how to clean the hardwood floors. Eventually going to have them refinished.

...but I'm just going to throw the carpet away and let them start the sanding. Unless you want to wait a while before the finishing, I'd hold off the cleaning. You can vaccuum and damp mop with a mild detergent. It will give you a preview of the floor and any damage before the finishers come in.
