This was an obvious attempted save.

I turned this about a year ago and cut through the sides (it 'ovaled' on me while hollowing) so I threw it in a corner. A couple of months ago I decided to carve some windows to hide the holes, and since I had a lot of top wall thickness I thought I'd try to carve an 'over-and-under' weave pattern and a chord. It came out looking kinda decent until I got the bright idea to woodburn the flaps. I was trying to make them look like leather. Big mistake. Looks more like mud.

It looks only slightly better in person. The carved part is hard to see in the pic.

Oh well. It was worth a shot!

See this is why you can't lay off for the summer. This is just great and if that is mud then it is beautiful Texas mud, cause this work is wonderful!!:)

Way to go.... an awesome save! Some people can diguise those mistakes very nicely! One guy said that no turner ever messes up... he just changes his design now and again ;)
